After seeing Kendra's sketches though, I'm definitely thinking I need to kick things up a notch. ;P

Polar and Shelf
So the one for polar is obviously not a sketch from life, it's just a doodle from my head. But I was thinking of when Ray and I went to Atlanta the first week of January for Passion, and even the locals were freezing. So for two Floridians - Yes we were walking around dressed like this. Sorry the quality is not so hot...(no pun intended) but you know how it can be when you sketch in col-erase, and on moleskine paper...bleh for scanning, at least on my crummy scanner.
And my sketch for "shelf" is not too exciting, I did it in less than 5 minutes at the end of teaching 4's and 5's at church, while the kids were in the play room. This is one of the shelves for many toys...that were currently all being played with.

Object of the Month: Shelf
My book shelf(shelves) done with a Pilot G-TEC-C 0.25 aka super tiny point pen. And the clutter at the bottom is me getting ready for some classes I'm taking this term at the Concept Design Academy.
* and yes that is a mickey eared Santa hat, and yes I do know its almost valentine's day. :P

Here are some sketches from China Town the other day that I didn't realize until Jessica pointed out they technically count as shelves. So here's two more.

Experimenting with Caran d'Ache
FINALLY had a chance to do the assignment. Sorry life has just been crazy lately. But my new media was Caran d'Ache crayons.
I used them with a combination of, ink, watercolor, and some gouache. Enjoy :]
Started with a quick crayon sketch in Caran d'Ache. Didn't like it so I washed it out with water. Then Went on top of the faint marks left with ink using a nib pen. Used some ink washes with a brush and then added some watercolor to have warms and cools present for balance.

These first two were done simultaneously compensating for drying time. Started w? a quick Caran d'Ache sketch. Used water to soften the overall feel. Went back into it w/ more Caran d'Ache, a different color blue, red, and black to pull the drawing back out. Then used a little water to smooth any areas I felt needed it. Finished w/ white Caran d'Ache to bring out the eye highlights.

This was my warm up before I got to the previous sketches. Started with Caran d'Ache. Softened it with water. Added warms with watercolor. Quick defining with ink nib pen and brush. More watercolor to build up more form in the face. Got out white gouache and fixed any incorrect areas that needed to be brought out of shadow to reinforce it's form. Once I scanned the image into the computer I brought it into Photoshop and fixed some proportion problems that came into play because of the angle I was working.

project #2 submission
so it's not exactly strictly from a literary work, and it's really more of a spot, but there you go. it came to me when my significant other finished my all-time favorite book, anna karenina, and here first and only response that really stuck with me was, 'well, it was really long.'well, the media was watercolor and digital (sorry jess - i tried the technique we were talking about and it just didn't want to happen). but this time, instead of using watercolor and just hamming up the levels or saturation or something with photoshop, i just went in with no shame and no regrets and just painted like half of the piece with a photoshop brush. hope it's not too obvious or too lame looking - i can pick out a place or two that should be better blended together - but it's working better for me than a watercolor texture slapped upon a photoshop piece, so i guess i might have to try this some more.

Project #2: New Media - Literary
Create an illustration with a new media or technique that you've never used before. I'm suggesting to do a traditional literary/narrative illustration (getting back to our roots), but it can really be of anything you feel like illustrating.
Ideas: -Read any good books lately, with scenes you just felt you had to illustrate?
-If not, maybe your inspired by a movie - try creating an alternate scene or continuation of the story
DEADLINE: Friday, October 9th

Moo Moos
So this is definitely not as far as I wanted to get with this by now, but the paying work came first this week. o_O
The layout of the sketch is not the final layout for the packaging...just a start from my sketchbook doodle. The product is an ice cream sandwich in the shape of a cute cow face, based on a real ice cream sandwich that Kendra and I have made together before. She gave me a cute set for making these at home that also included a piggy and a star shape. ^_^ So far the only name I've come up with for the product is Moo Moos, but I'm terrible at naming things. Any suggestions?

come try mutanimals!
so here's me playing around with an idea my apparently very creative girlfriend came up with. of course i've still got to color the animal cookies. was thinking of putting a punny or other company in the blank space next to the smiley radioactive symbol in the top left.other than that, i'm just kind of floating with this concept. any ideas or suggestions before i take it further (if it's worth taking further?)

WWF Candy Bars

I chose to highlight the Sumatran Tiger, Black Rhino, and the Western Lowland Gorilla. These are 3 of the most endangered species featured on WWF's (World Wildlife Fund) website. On the Danger Watch chart these species are at CR which means they are facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
